Liverpool Red-Faced as Anfield Defence Crumbles

By Umarah Naz. For all it’s bad publicity, 2016 was in fact a fantastic year. For Liverpool Football Club at Anfield at least. Embed from Getty Images It had become a fortress again, and one where Liverpool had only lost one match in the entire year. It was a run that fans could be mightily proud of and had visiting teams on the back foot before a ball had even been kicked. After all, home form is key in any clubs progress. But all good runs must come to an end at some point and there’s no shame in losing continue reading

Swansea 0, Liverpool 1 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Swansea City 0, Liverpool 1 Liberty Stadium, Swansea (20,828) Liverpool scorer: Henderson 68′ Simon Mignolet – 8 Commanding from the outset. Made good saves from Gomis and Sigurdsson in the first half. Emre Can – 5.5 Couldn’t cope with Gomis early on, and let Neil Taylor past him with ease on one occasion. Still vital to the system when the team have the ball. Martin Skrtel – 7.5 Covered well in the middle of the defence. Stepped out of defence and made a good forward pass in the build up to the goal. Another solid, impressive performance. Mamadou Sakho – 7 continue reading

Liverpool 4, Swansea 1 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Liverpool 4, Swansea 1 Anfield, Liverpool (44,714) Liverpool scorers: Moreno 33′; Lallana 51′, 61′; Shelvey 69′ (og) Swansea scorer: Sigurdsson 52′ Simon Mignolet – 5.5 Relatively untroubled in terms of shots against. Came forward to collect stray balls a few times, but his kicking and distribution was very poor. Emre Can – 6.5 Played some great passes forward from right centre back, as you’d expect from the midfielder, one particular cross-field ball to Moreno stood out. Might have been better positionally on the original cross for the Swansea goal, and could have closed Routledge down better, but this is nitpicking for someone continue reading

Liverpool 2, Swansea City 1 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Liverpool 2, Swansea City 1 Anfield, Liverpool (42,582) Liverpool scorers: Balotelli (86′), Lovren (90′+5) Swansea City scorer: Emnes (65′) Player Ratings Brad Jones – 6.5 Was in good positions to make some routine saves, and handled well from an awkward Shelvey free kick. Was good off his line and sweeping up, but critics might say Mignolet, with his bigger one-on-one presence, would have saved Emnes’s shot for the Swansea goal. Javier Manquillo – 7.5 Held his own against the tricky Jefferson Montero, and could claim to have won the battle. Plenty of other full-backs have, and will, struggle against the Ecuadorian. Was asked continue reading

LFC Player Ratings & Tactics - Liverpool 4, Swansea City 3

Liverpool 4, Swansea City 3 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44, 731) Liverpool scorers: Sturridge (3′, 36′), Henderson (20′, 74′) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 5.5 Not his most convincing performance. Offers little assistance to the defence when it comes to taking control of situations in his area. Not much he could do about the goals, and made a couple of saves. Jon Flanagan – 6.5 Did well in difficult situations when midfielders or forwards were struggling to find room to offer a pass. Defended well in a battle with the tricky Wayne Routledge, and managed to get forward on a couple of occasions, continue reading

Liverpool 5, Swansea City 0 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,832) Liverpool scorers: Gerrard (34pen), Coutinho (46), Enrique (50), Suarez (56), Sturridge (71pen) Pepe Reina – 6 Was fairly untroubled throughout the game, but looked confident and decisive when called upon. Glen Johnson – 7 Showed glimpses of his early season form, and can hopefully put some recent poor displays behind him. Jamie Carragher – 6 Wasn’t tested much by a Michu-less Swansea attack. Played the ball around his back four, and when he plays the back four is most certainly his, such are his organisational skills. Daniel Agger – 6 Did what continue reading

Swansea v Liverpool Premier League - LFC Player Ratings

Swansea 0, Liverpool 0 Liberty Stadium, Swansea (Att: 37,810) *Pepe Reina – 8 Looked back to his best in all aspects of his game. Made some good saves, some great passes, and took a nasty boot to the face for his trouble, but carried on playing. Glen Johnson – 7 Back in his usual position of right back. More of the same from the talented full back who defended well and worked well with Sterling in attack. Maybe could have done better with two headed chances. Martin Skrtel – 7 Another dominant display from the Slovak. Daniel Agger – 7 continue reading
