Manchester United

By Umarah Naz. Tentative would be the best word to describe the majority of Liverpool fans feelings before the clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday evening. The home side came into the crucial game on the back of a nine match winning streak, whilst the visitors remain winless in 2017 in all competitions. Winless but not defeated. Reds have enjoyed an excellent season so far, (with the occasional blip) but no one can deny that the three draws and one loss since beating Manchester City on New Years Eve have been a downer. Hence, the apprehension in continue reading

Liverpool v Manchester United - LFC Tactics & Report from Dour Stalemate

Tactics After a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield, Jose Mourinho accused Liverpool of playing too defensively. It was a cunning ploy to detract the attention from his own side’s defensive, long-ball tactics, but his tactical view of Liverpool’s play was (intentionally) incorrect. Manchester United went with the classic triple target man, double full-backs, and, er, Herrera set-up. #LFCvMUFC pic.twitter.com/xsItxeFMoT — James Nalton (@JDNalton) October 17, 2016 He accused the home side of using two defensive midfielders in the shape of Jordan Henderson and Emre Can, implying that Jurgen Klopp had set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 rather than the 4-3-3 they’ve used continue reading

Manchester United 3, Liverpool 1 Old Trafford, Manchester (75,347) Liveprool Scorer: Benteke (84′) Man United scorers: Blind 49′, Herrera 70′ (pen), Martial 86′ Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 5 His uncertain start to the game spread throughout the back four and encouraged Manchester United. Couldn’t do anything about the goals. Nathaniel Clyne – 5 Commits the foul which leads to the free kick for the first goal in what was a busy afternoon for him. Did well up against Memphis Depay, so much so that the Dutchman was substituted at half-time, but struggled in the second half once Ashley Young came on. continue reading

Liverpool 1, Manchester United 2 Anfield, Liverpool (44,405) Liverpool scorer: Sturridge 69′ Man United scorer: Mata 14′, 59′ Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 7 A few shaky moments in possession of the ball, but somehow he managed to get out of trouble each time. Almost saved the first goal, and couldn’t do anything with the second. Saved a penalty from Rooney late in the game. Emre Can – 6 Was targeted by Manchester United from the outset, as they played long balls in his direction aiming for Marouane Fellaini. Struggled early on, recovered slightly, then gave away a soft penalty before the continue reading

Manchester United 3, Liverpool 0 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Manchester United 3, Liverpool 0 Old Trafford, Manchester (75,331) Man United scorers: Rooney 12′, Mata 40′, Van Persie 71′ Player Ratings Brad Jones – 5.5 Couldn’t see around Skrtel for the first goal, but tried to predict Rooney’s shot and guessed the wrong way. The striker curled it around the Slovakian centre back into Jones’s left corner. Should have done better for the third goal, for which he inexplicably vacated his goal, but his distribution and kicking was an improvement on Mignolet – quicker with his throws to launch attacks, and slightly better with his kicking. Glen Johnson – N/A Brought off continue reading

Manchester United 3, Liverpool 1 - Liverpool Tactics

Manchester United 3, Liverpool 1 Sun Life Stadium, Miami (51,014) Liverpool scorer: Gerrard (14′ pen) Manchester United scorers: Rooney (55′), Mata (57′), Lingard (88′) It was a game dubbed as “more than a friendly”, and was only the second time the two biggest teams in England had met in such non-competitive circumstances. Although there was a certain tempo to the game, which you might not usually see in these games, it was primarily a exercise in match fitness and tactical familiarity. Liverpool started the game using a 4-3-3 (4-1-2-3), against Manchester United’s new-look 3-4-3. The front three of Manchester United made it difficult continue reading

LFC Tactics & Player Ratings - Manchester United 0, Liverpool 3

Manchester United 0, Liverpool 3 Old Trafford, Manchester (Att: 75,225) Liverpool scorers: Gerrard 34′ (pen), 46′ (pen); Suarez 84′ Tactics Liverpool stuck with the diamond midfield set-up which eventually gave them a 3-0 win away at Southampton. The difference being that the more effective Raheem Sterling was employed in place of Philippe Coutinho at the attacking point behind the two strikers. Suarez and Sturridge both played centrally with occasional width offered by the full-backs, who weren’t overly attacking. Allen and Henderson covered lots of ground on either side of the midfield, helping out their fullbacks and covering more centrally when required. Each continue reading

Player Ratings & Tactics - Manchester United 1, Liverpool 0

Manchester United 1, Liverpool 0 Old Trafford, Manchester (Att: 65,701) (25/09/2013) 22. Simon Mignolet – 6.5 Made some good saves in the second half and was generally faultless. 4 Kolo Toure – 6 Looked the more assured of the back three, managed to get forward at times to confuse the opposition defence. 37 Martin Skrtel – 6 Decent enough performance in the centre of the defence, communication sometimes a problem between him, Sakho, and Mignolet. 17 Mamadou Sakho – 6 Looked more settled but still has the odd mistake in him. Hasn’t been helped much by those around him in his continue reading

Liverpool 1, Manchester United 0 Anfield (Att: 44,411) Liverpool Scorer:  Sturridge (4) 22. Mignolet – 6.5 Dealt well with most things which came his way. 2. Glen Johnson – 6.5 An all round decent game from the right back, if anything his passing could have been a bit tidier. Went off injured in the second half. 37. Martin Skrtel – 7.5 Thrown into the deep end on his return to the side after the injury to Touré. Dealt well with Van Persie and used his physical strength to win his battles. Looks shaky on his clearances when running to his own continue reading

Manchester United 2, Liverpool 1 - LFC Player Ratings

Manchester United 2, Liverpool 1 Old Trafford, Manchester (Att: 75,501) Liverpool scorer: Sturridge (57) Pepe Reina – 6 Made a couple of good saves and, the odd wayward pass aside, was generally solid. Andre Wisdom – 6 Coped well with the daunting task asked of him. Has the mentality to play at this level but just needs to improve some of his technique. Got forward well on one occasion but slipped as he went to shoot, sending the ball wide. Martin Skrtel – 6 Couldn’t cope with Welbeck’s pace and movement, but handled the rest of the opposition attack with continue reading
