Liverpool Broken by Benteke Brace as Sakho Celebrates - Liverpool 1, Crystal Palace 2

By Umarah Naz As Liverpool succumbed to Crystal Palace at Anfield (again!), it was a case of which centre-back infuriated us the most. Was it the inept display by Dejan Lovren or his ex, Mamadou Sakho, celebrating Christian Benteke’s equaliser? Probably the former, and rightly so. As much as Sakho giving LFC the proverbial slap in the face irked many, it was our own flaws that lost us the game. Embed from Getty Images   Detracting from them by concentrating on the poor judgement of an exiled player could be described as poor form. Safe to say, Sakho’s not coming continue reading

Liverpool Tactical Overview & Analysis of Crystal Palace 1, Liverpool 2

Since the return of Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool have been playing with a similar formation, and one which only changes subtly due to the personnel in it. Prior to the English striker’s return, Roberto Firmino had replaced Christian Benteke as the striker as Jurgen Klopp sought more movement up front, both on and off the ball. Firmino offers pressing from the front – a prerequisite in Klopp’s system – as well as being more mobile in attack. The Brazilian showed surprisingly good hold-up play, outshining Benteke even in this area, while also being able to run into the channels, play on continue reading

Liverpool 1, Crystal Palace 3 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Liverpool 1, Crystal Palace 3 Anfield, Liverpool (44,673) Liverpool scorer: Lallana 26′ Crystal Palace scorers: Puncheon 43′, Zaha 60′, Murray 90′ Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6 Repeatedly let down by those in front of him, not least after saving a penalty at the end and none of his team-mates followed up for the rebound. Should have done better for the free-kick goal scored by Puncheon, which went in easily on the side the Belgian should have had covered. Emre Can – 6 Tried, looked bothered, and perhaps should have had a more central role. Gave away the free kick which continue reading

Crystal Palace 1, Liverpool 2 Selhurst Park, London Liverpool scorers: Sturridge 49′, Lallana 58′ Palace scorer: Campbell 15′ Player Ratings *Simon Mignolet – 7.5 Made some key saves which kept Liverpool in the tie, and was commanding in his area more often than not. Emre Can – 6 Goes wandering from his defensive station but you get the impression that this is part of the plan. As long as someone covers for him he’s a great attacking weapon from deep. Martin Skrtel – 5 At fault for the Palace goal, and struggled with Dwight Gayle whenever he came up against him. Gave away a couple of continue reading

Palace targeted him by placing two players in front of him at set pieces. Javier Manquillo – 6.5 Coped well against Yannick Bolasie despite have little support when Crystal Palace were on the counter attack. Martin Skrtel – 4.5 We know what to expect from Skrtel now, and he’s not good when exposed one on one. Was asleep for the continue reading

LFC Tactics & Player Ratings - Crystal Palace 3, Liverpool 3

Crystal Palace 3, Liverpool 3Selhurst Park, London (Att: 25,261)Liverpool scorers: Allen (18′), Sturridge (53′), Suarez (55′) Crystal Palace scorers: Delaney (79′), Gayle (81′, 88′) Tactics Liverpool set up with a diamond midfield with Sterling at the tip, and Sturridge back in the side for Coutinho who wasn’t quite fit. A game of attacking football from Liverpool left the defence exposed at times, and Crystal Palace ruthlessly took advantage of this during a 12 minute period towards the end of the second half. Lucas and Suarez looked to be tiring in the second half, but instead Brendan Rodgers brought off Sterling. Many have said Liverpool were continue reading
