Dejan Lovren – 4 Gifted a chance to Arnautovic and was stranded for numerous other Stoke chances, including their goal. Joel Matip – 6 continue reading

12th Man Required as Karius keeps Liverpool in Race to Wembley

By Umarah Naz Liverpool will need their world famous twelfth man in a fortnights time at Anfield, when they face Southampton in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final. Embed from Getty Images Having suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at St. Mary’s in the first leg, Liverpool now have it all to do in the return leg to book their ticket to Wembley for next month. Jurgen Klopp reverted to a full-strength team after the youngsters had their opportunity to impress against Plymouth at the weekend. Loris Karius kept his place, as did Lucas Leiva and Emre Can. Liverpool v Manchester United - LFC Tactics & Report from Dour Stalemate

Tactics After a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield, Jose Mourinho accused Liverpool of playing too defensively. It was a cunning ploy to detract the attention from his own side’s defensive, long-ball tactics, but his tactical view of Liverpool’s play was (intentionally) incorrect. Manchester United went with the classic triple target man, double full-backs, and, er, Herrera set-up. #LFCvMUFC pic.twitter.com/xsItxeFMoT — James Nalton (@JDNalton) October 17, 2016 He accused the home side of using two defensive midfielders in the shape of Jordan Henderson and Emre Can, implying that Jurgen Klopp had set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 rather than the 4-3-3 they’ve used continue reading

Chelsea 1, Liverpool 0 - Stateside Tactics

Liverpool began the stateside leg of their pre-season with a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea in Pasedena, Los Angeles, California. Gary Cahil’s header from a Chelsea corner was the only goal of the game, and it harked back to LFC’s set piece troubles in recent seasons. Embed from Getty Images Jurgen Klopp’s men continued with the 4-3-3 formation used during the majority of the pre-season games so far. Left sided defender Ragnar Klavan made his first appearance for the club, which meant captain for the day Dejan Lovren shifted to the right side of defence. Lovren had previously played on the continue reading

Match Report & Tactics: Liverpool's 1-0 Friendly Win at Tranmere Rovers

Liverpool kicked off their first full season under the management of Jurgen Klopp with a friendly away to local side Tranmere Rovers. An impressive, surprisingly sharp display from Danny Ings was the highlight of the game, but there were plenty of encouraging signs from a few of the club’s academy players. Embed from Getty Images The German manager attended the game fresh from signing a new six year contract, and used 22 players during this training exercise against National League (5th tier) opposition. Klopp’s 4-3-3 formation surprised a few people, but this fairly simple system is one which is often continue reading

Liverpool Tactical Overview & Analysis of Crystal Palace 1, Liverpool 2

Since the return of Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool have been playing with a similar formation, and one which only changes subtly due to the personnel in it. Prior to the English striker’s return, Roberto Firmino had replaced Christian Benteke as the striker as Jurgen Klopp sought more movement up front, both on and off the ball. Firmino offers pressing from the front – a prerequisite in Klopp’s system – as well as being more mobile in attack. The Brazilian showed surprisingly good hold-up play, outshining Benteke even in this area, while also being able to run into the channels, play on continue reading

Back to Basics for Klopp's Liverpool in City victory.

There have been numerous discussions recently on the subject of Jurgen Klopp’s tactics, or rather a supposed lack of them, which has left many fans feeling uneasy. In the 3-0 victory against Manchester City on Wednesday evening, however, it’s fair to say that the German answered his critics emphatically. He masterminded the victory by going back to basics tactically. Back in October when Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager his first match was away at Spurs. The match finished 0-0 but Klopp earned rave reviews for how he’d set Liverpool up. The Reds, who had been woeful defensively in the continue reading
