Back to Basics for Klopp's Liverpool in City victory.

There have been numerous discussions recently on the subject of Jurgen Klopp’s tactics, or rather a supposed lack of them, which has left many fans feeling uneasy. In the 3-0 victory against Manchester City on Wednesday evening, however, it’s fair to say that the German answered his critics emphatically. He masterminded the victory by going back to basics tactically. Back in October when Klopp was appointed as Liverpool manager his first match was away at Spurs. The match finished 0-0 but Klopp earned rave reviews for how he’d set Liverpool up. The Reds, who had been woeful defensively in the continue reading

Liverpool 1, Bournemouth 0 Anfield, Liverpool (41,948) Liverpool scorer: Clyne 17′ Player Ratings *Adam Bogdan – 7.5 Made a few really good saves in the first half from Junior Stanislas which were a big reason for the clean-sheet, and a big reason some of his team-mates mistakes weren’t noticed as much as they might have been. Kicks the ball with more conviction than Mignolet, and isn’t afraid to come off his line. Made another good save in injury time from Ritchie. Nathaniel Clyne – 7 Was playing out of position at left back but put in a good performance. Scored his continue reading

Chelsea 1, Liverpool 0 Stamford Bridge, London (40,659) Chelsea scorer: Ivanovic 94′ Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 8 Made a brilliant reaction save with his feet in the second half, after a Diego Costa shot was deflected on its way through, and made another vital tackle on the Brazilian not long after to save a certain goal. Emre Can – 7 Coped well with the threat of Hazard, and could keep pace with the Belgian once the field opened up, using his physical advantage to counter any trickery. Liverpool 1, Chelsea 1 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Liverpool 1, Chelsea 1 Anfield, Liverpool (44,573) Liverpool scorer: Sterling 59′ Chelsea scorer: Hazard 18′ (pen) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6 Emre Can – 6.5 Gave away the penalty in the first half with a clumsy challenge on Hazard which the Belgian expected. Was otherwise excellent in a relatively unfamiliar position against one of the best players in the league. Chose the right times to go forward from his right centre back position. Martin Skrtel – 7.5 Another solid game in a position which suits him. Mamadou Sakho – 7 Should become a mainstay of the Liverpool defence. Good with and continue reading

Distribution OK, especially from hands, but can still do better. Kolo Touré – 6 The best of a bad bunch in defence, as is often the case, until Sakho came on. Played a good ball into the centre of the park to Lallana, who then set up Sterling for the third goal. Martin Skrtel – 5.5 Conspired with continue reading

Liverpool 2, Swansea City 1 Anfield, Liverpool (42,582) Liverpool scorers: Balotelli (86′), Lovren (90′+5) Swansea City scorer: Emnes (65′) Player Ratings Brad Jones – 6.5 Was in good positions to make some routine saves, and handled well from an awkward Shelvey free kick. Was good off his line and sweeping up, but critics might say Mignolet, with his bigger one-on-one presence, would have saved Emnes’s shot for the Swansea goal. Javier Manquillo – 7.5 Held his own against the tricky Jefferson Montero, and could claim to have won the battle. Plenty of other full-backs have, and will, struggle against the Ecuadorian. Was asked continue reading

Manchester United 1, Liverpool 0 Old Trafford, Manchester (Att: 65,701) (25/09/2013) 22. Simon Mignolet – 6.5 Made some good saves in the second half and was generally faultless. 4 Kolo Toure – 6 Looked the more assured of the back three, managed to get forward at times to confuse the opposition defence. 37 Martin Skrtel – 6 Decent enough performance in the centre of the defence, communication sometimes a problem between him, Sakho, and Mignolet. 17 Mamadou Sakho – 6 Looked more settled but still has the odd mistake in him. Hasn’t been helped much by those around him in his continue reading
