Manchester City 1, Liverpool 4 - LFC Tactics & Player Ratings

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 4 Etihad Stadium, Manchester (54,444) Liverpool scorers: Mangala 7′ (og), Coutinho 23′, Firmino 32′, Skrtel 81′ Manchester City scorer: Agüero 44′ Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 5.5 Poor with his kicking as usual, and had little to do other than pick Aguero’s strike out of the net when he was beaten (by an excellent shot) from distance. Nathaniel Clyne – 6.5 Made a few errors early on including a poor cross when through on goal, and delaying to long when presented with a great chance to play Lallana in, meaning his team-mate was offside. Settled in after that, despite continue reading

Liverpool 2, Arsenal 2 - LFC Player Ratings & Tactics

Liverpool 2, Arsenal 2 Anfield, Liverpool (44,703) Liverpool scorers: Coutinho 45′, Skrtel 90′+7 Arsenal scorers: Debuchy 45′+1, Giroud 64′ Player Ratings Brad Jones – 6 Was blamed for both goals, but he makes the entire team feel more comfortable when playing out from the back, and he actually collects the odd cross, unlike Mignolet. Jones brings quicker and more decisive distribution from the back, especially with his throwing, but he has nowhere near the shot-stopping ability of Mignolet based on recent displays. Watched as Debuchy’s header passed his right hand, and saw Giroud’s shot go tamely through his legs. Kolo Touré – continue reading

LFC Tactics & Ratings - Liverpool 3, Manchester City 2

Liverpool 3, Manchester City 2 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,601) Liverpool scorers: Sterling (6′), Skrtel (26′), Coutinho (78′) Manchester City scorers: Silva (57′),  Johnson (62′ OG) Tactics Liverpool opted for a diamond midfield to start the game. The noticeable difference to the usual set up in this formation was that Henderson was on the left side, helping Jon Flanagan to stifle the attacking threat posed by Jesús Navas and Pablo Zabaleta. Philippe Coutinho started on the right of the diamond, with Raheem Sterling in attacking midfield down the centre. Luis Suarez played on the right in the front two, as he looked to target continue reading

LFC Player Ratings & Tactics - Cardiff 3, Liverpool 6

Cardiff City 3, Liverpool 6 Cardiff City Stadium (Att: 28,018) Cardiff Scorers: Mutch (9′, 88′), Campbell (25′) Liverpool scorers: Suarez (16′, 60′, 90′), Skrtel (41′, 54′), Sturridge (75′) Because 6-0 would be boring… Tactics Brendan Rodgers stuck with the diamond formation which previously produced wins against Manchester United, and Southampton. The full-backs were slightly more attacking than in recent weeks which left the defence exposed at times. This put a lot of pressure on the three midfielders – Gerrard, Henderson, and Allen –  to help out the two centre backs. Defensively the team struggled positionally against the quickness of Jordan Mutch, Frazier Campbell, continue reading

LFC Player Ratings & Tactics - Liverpool 5, Arsenal 1

Liverpool 5, Arsenal 1 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,701) Liverpool scorers: Skrtel (1′, 10′), Sterling (16′, 52′), Sturridge (20′) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6 Made a few decent saves but still struggles to command his area at times. Punched one loose ball into trouble when it was easier to catch it, but did collect one cross in his hands which brought loud cheers from the Kop. Jon Flanagan – 7.5 Shows the composure of a seasoned first team player, making it easy to forget he’s only 21 and only has 28 appearances for the club. Even if Glen Johnson returned tomorrow, he continue reading

LFC Player Ratings & Tactics - Chelsea 2, Liverpool 1

Chelsea 2, Liverpool 1 Stamford Bridge, London (Att: 41,614) Liverpool scorer: Skrtel (3) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6 Could perhaps have done better with an Eto’o goal – a mis-hit shot which he got a touch on but not enough to stop it slithering into the goal. Made a good save from a Lampard shot, and not much he could do about a goal from Eden Hazard. Passing was decent, long and short. Glen Johnson – 4.5 Seems to be getting worse as the weeks go by. Apart from one good left footed shot he was sloppy and off the continue reading

LFC Tactics & Player Ratings - Liverpool 4, West Ham 1

Liverpool 4, West Ham United 1 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,781) Liverpool scorers: Demel (42 OG), Sakho (47), Suárez (81), O’Brien (84 OG) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6.5 Was relatively untroubled in terms of shots other than one excellent reflex save from a Maiga header. Distribution was hit and miss with his feet, but looked dangerous when throwing to start counter attacks. Glen Johnson – 6.5 Can still be wasteful at times but provided one pinpoint cross for Suarez’s header. Offered lots of width on the right and made some good overlapping runs, spending most of his time in attacking positions. Martin continue reading

Liverpool Player Ratings & Tactics - Hull City 3, Liverpool 1

Hull City 3, Liverpool 1 KC Stadium, Kingston upon Hull (Att: 24,940) Liverpool scorer: Gerrard (27) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – 6 Let in three goals for the second game running, but was let down by those in front of him yet again. Couldn’t do anything about any of the goals. Glen Johnson – 5 Another poor performance from the right back who offered nothing going forward when Liverpool desperately needed attacking outlets. Didn’t contribute much to the defence, and was sloppy in possession in vital areas. Kolo Toure – 5.5 Made a couple of good tackles and interventions, but everything seemed continue reading

Tactics & Player Ratings - Liverpool 4, Fulham 0

Liverpool 4, Fulham 0 Anfield, Liverpool (Att: 44,768) Liverpool scorers: Amorebieta (23 OG), Skrtel (26), Suárez (36, 54) Player Ratings Simon Mignolet – N/A Had little to do. Made the odd useful throw out of defence, but was generally untroubled apart from one save from a Berbatov shot. Glen Johnson – 6.5 An impressive performance from the full back returning to the side. Made good inroads down the right hand side and took up some great positions to give the team width. Still lacking a bit in the way of a final pass/shot at times. Martin Skrtel – 7.5 Scored a bullet continue reading

Swansea 2, Liverpool 2 - Player Ratings, Report & Tactics

Swansea 2, Liverpool 2 Liberty Stadium, Swansea (Att: 20,752) Liverpool Scorers:  Sturridge (4), Moses (36) 22 Simon Mignolet – 7 Made some good saves and was more commanding in the area than usual. 47 Andre Wisdom – 6 Did a good job but doesn’t offer much in an attacking sense compared to Glen Johnson. *37  Martin Skrtel – 7.5 Another good performance from the centre back, made some great tackles and clearances, one in particular on Bony which saved a goal. Performed a good body slam on Michu, which adds 0.5 to his player rating. Not without fault, but did well continue reading
