Liverpool easily dispatched a below par Borussia Dortmund side at Anfield, in their last pre-season game of the summer.

The game saw Anfield debuts for a number of players, and gave fans the opportunity to see new signings Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo in a Liverpool shirt for the first time.

Both impressed in a new look back four, and there was noticeably more communication from Mignolet to the players in front of him – not just the defence. That said, much bigger tests lie ahead, and the defence weren’t tested too much by Dortmund who weren’t at full strength for this game.

Liverpool lined up in a formation resembling a 4-2-3-1, with Emre Can and Steven Gerrard playing as the deep two, and Coutinho as the 10.

Dejan Lovren defended aggressively from left centre back, stepping up to intercept passes in to the strikers, and putting pressure on them as they received the ball.

Liverpool made six substitutions overall in the second half, with Lucas coming on for Can at half time. José Enrique replaced Johnson at left back on 62, and Jordon Ibe replaced Coutinho on 72 minutes with Sterling moving to the centre.

Rickie Lambert replaced Daniel Sturridge but couldn’t get into the game, Joe Allen replaced Jordan Henderson as the side moved to a 4-3-3 with Gerrard and Lucas as a two behind the Welshman in the midfield three. Martin Kelly replaced Javier Manquillo late on.

Liverpool’s stand-out performers were Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, Dejan Lovren, and Javier Manquillo.

Here’s a video compilation of Coutinho’s impressive display.
