Bournemouth 0, Liverpool 2
Goldsands Stadium, Bournemouth (Att: 11, 475)
Liverpool scorers: Moses (26), Sturridge (60)
Brad Jones – 6
Didn’t get to some crosses he came for, but that seems to be par for the course for Liverpool ‘keepers at the moment. The important thing was that he came and got enough on them, and did enough to keep the clean sheet.
Martin Kelly – 6
Looks like an improvement on Glen Johnson. More solid in defence and makes himself available in attack even if he’s not quite as adventurous as Johnson.
Martin Skrtel – 6.5
A good performance from Skrtel who put his boot and his head in when needed. Received staples to the head after a clash at a set piece, came back on undeterred.
Kolo Toure – 5.5
Aly Cissokho – 5.5
Steven Gerrard – 6.5
Brendan Rodgers persisted with Gerrard in the deeper role, and he looked slightly more at home in the position today. His pass success of 92% is a big improvement on recent games, and was helped by Coutinho, Henderson, and others finding space in front of him. Completed 6 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 5 clearances in what was a decent defensive performance, and showed good reading of the game whilst Skrtel was off the pitch receiving treatment. 8/11 long balls completed.
Jordan Henderson – 6
Always looking to get into space and energetic in defence. Business as usual for Henderson, as he skied a good chance to score over the bar.
Philippe Coutinho – 6.5
Looked a bit sharper than in recent weeks, and gave as good as he got physically. Always offering himself as an outlet dropping deep from his number 10 position.
Daniel Sturridge – 6.5
Alternated with Suarez in the wide right role. Coolly finished one chance with his right foot after being put through by the Uruguayan, but wasted a couple of other chances. Nearly scored a great lob over the ‘keeper but it bounced on top of the bar.
Luis Suarez – 6.5
Quiet by his standards, but still managed to assist both goals. Was through one-on-one, but placed his lobbed effort over the bar into the Liverpool fans.
*Victor Moses – 7
A turnaround on recent weeks, as he constantly troubled the Bournemouth defence even when Liverpool were out of sorts in the first half. His snapshot from outside the area surprised the ‘keeper, and led to Liverpool’s much needed first goal at a time when the team were on the back foot.
Jon Flanagan – N/A
(Kelly 72) Came on and did a similar job to Kelly. Getting up and down the right and not afraid to attack. At one occasion he even found himself in the centre forward position!
Luis Alberto – N/A
(Coutinho 84) Came on and gave the team an element of control in the opponents half.
Raheem Sterling – N/A
Brendan Rodgers set the team up in a familiar formation, with Steven Gerrard returning to his role deeper in the midfield. Henderson played just in front of Gerrard, offering the captain the shorter option, and Coutinho dropped from his number 10 position when needed to make a three in midfield.
Victor Moses played on the left wing as an inverted winger, and he cut inside onto his right foot for Liverpool’s first goal. However he wasn’t averse to going on the outside of the full-back.
Suarez and Sturridge were swapping positions between the right side and the centre forward position, both looking to play off each other when the opportunity arose.
None of the substitutes changed the shape, even though Alberto signalled that the team were going to a 1-2 in midfield when he came on. The game was sufficiently stretched that Henderson had to track back to defend the counter-attack alongside Gerrard.
